The Club Today 2006-2008

2006/2007

A new, revitalised committee started the year with a bang and changes started slowly bring the Metro club back to what it was in the past. We appointed a Trust Co-Ordinator and throughout the year he managed to secure over $50,000 worth of grants to upgrade our uniforms and gear.

In terms of results for the year, we had several teams in championship rounds with one of our U13 Boys sides (coached by Carl Gribble) winning the U13 Auckland Championship as well as coming third in the Top Team Tournament and our other U13 Boys side (coached by Max De Brett) winning the U13 Auckland Plate Round.

We had eleven players in the junior Auckland representative squads – Casey Nukunuku, Steven Rogerson, Dimitri Morunga, Lewis Jerrard, Luke Hawks, Phoenix Taulilo-Makaea, Jarrod King, Billy Dean, Jessica Owens, Josh Cooke and Patrick Langlois.

In terms of senior results, our Premier Men came second in the AFC Championship, second in the Dean Schick Tournament and 5th in the Club Nationals. Our Reserve Men took out third place in the Championship round.

We had one player named in the Black Sox training squad – Bernard Hale and two players named in the Junior Black Sox training squad – Josh Cooke and Patrick Langlois. Josh and Patrick were on the successful NZ tour to Australia where they won the Friendship Series for the first time in nine years and beat the Australians in a 7 game test series by 5 games to 2.  Dion Nukunuku was named as Assistant Coach for the NZ Junior Black Sox team.

2007/2008

Another building year for the Metro Softball committee – continuing on their good work from the previous year.

We welcomed a Premier Women’s side to our Club this year as well as welcoming back our Division 4 Women to the club. It’s great to see so many women playing softball.

Our junior teams are on track to be in several championship rounds this year as we were last year.

This year we have 21 Auckland representatives – Makayla Mave, Dimitri Morunga, Damon Patumaka, Lewis Jerard, Steven Rogerson, Jarrod Gribble, Casey Nukunuku, Rueben Dean, Shaun Falea’ana, Cameron Bearman, Esetera Carson-Haunga, Clarissa Mafoe, Kate Livingstone, Beth Stavert, Teila Faumuina, Tiandra Morunga, Jenny Williams, Sally Bowden, Valdemar Terkleson, Josh Cooke and Patrick Langlois.

We had the following players named in NPC and Franchise teams – Duane Jerrard, Josh Niu, Des Pemerika, Megan Farrell, Amber Irving and Vivian Marr.

We had Megan Farrell named in the NZ White Sox training squad and Josh Cooke and Patrick Langlois named in the NZ Junior Black Sox training squad.  Dion Nukunuku is the Assistant Coach of the NZ Junior Black Sox team.

Our Premier Men had a slow start to the season, with a few new young players in the line-up, but they are proving themselves to be a very worthy foe (as many teams have found!).

Our Premier Women are also doing well in the competition and they are looking forward to a great second half of the season.
